Leveraging Temporal Wealth for Eternal GainPrimjer
Day 4: How to Give
Today let’s look at four ways God calls us to give.
1. Give cheerfully.
We’re not to be like the Pharisees, who gave out of compulsion. Instead, we’re to give ourselves to God more and more. In turn, we will be more cheerful and joyful as we glorify God through sacrificial giving. This type of mindset and attitude is unthinkable apart from the work of the Holy Spirit.
2. Give with an attitude of thanksgiving.
A grateful attitude grows as we remember God’s provision in the past, benefits in the present, and promises for the future. Also, as we reflect on the depth and vastness of His gifts to us, being generous will come more easily.
What are some of those gifts? To start, He has given us “an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for us” (1 Peter 1:4); He has given us eternal security; He blesses us with “every spiritual blessing” (Ephesians 1:3); and He bestows on us “immeasurable riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God” (Romans 11:33). How can we not have a posture of gratitude for all this (and much more)?
3. Give anonymously.
In a society that glorifies self, it is almost impossible to give without anyone knowing. Focusing on the betterment of others rather than bolstering ourselves requires humility. It means surrendering our will to God and acknowledging Him as the Giver of all things. The wealth we give away is His; we are merely stewards entrusted with it for a time.
Anonymous giving rightfully assigns all honor and glory to God, the ultimate Source of provision. It also reduces the temptation to give from the selfish motives of seeking reciprocity and personal gain. It teaches us to look to God instead of currying favor with human beings.
4. If you are married, give in harmony with your spouse.
God does not need your money at the expense of your marriage. There are various potential scenarios of couples: two believers, one believer and one nonbeliever, one mature believer and one not-as-mature believer, and so on. The best approach is to honor one another by listening carefully and showing genuine respect for each other.
God is always growing both you and your spouse, but He may do so in different ways and at different rates. Giving together not only increases your fellowship with your spouse but reflects the glory of God and provides a witness to those around you. (Tip: Begin by giving an amount you are both comfortable with, even if it might be less than you desire.)

We all have two choices: Follow the wisdom of this world or follow the Wisdom of God. This is a particularly pressing decision in our daily lives as we determine where to allocate our wealth. Leverage provides a roadmap for Christians to use their earthly gifts–not for personal benefit–but for the advancement of His Kingdom.
