Real Hope: Jesus' Birth Foretold

Dan 6 od 7

A Prophetic Glimpse

While this psalm is traditionally attributed to King Solomon and reflects on the aspirations and hopes for a righteous and just king’s reign, in vv10–11 the psalmist’s prayer extends beyond the borders of Israel and expresses a strong desire for the king’s rule to transcend national boundaries. There are three thematic similarities between these verses and the Gospel account of the birth of Jesus:

Firstly, Matthew records the visitation of the magi or wise men from the east who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. This event is the fulfilment of this psalmic prophecy, as it involves kings or wise men paying homage to Jesus.

Secondly, these verses suggest the rise of a mighty and universal ruler who would be served by all nations and kings. The Gospels, especially Matthew, emphasise Jesus as the Messiah and as the King of the Jews. His birth in Bethlehem, according to other prophetic scriptures, signifies His royal lineage as the descendant of King David.

Thirdly, these verses imply a figure of great spiritual importance whose influence extends beyond national borders. The Gospels provide the theological context for Jesus’ birth, emphasising His divine nature, His role as the Saviour of humanity, and the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.

This psalm offers us a prophetic glimpse of the universal kingship and spiritual authority of the long-awaited righteous and just King, Jesus Christ.

Real Hope: Jesus' Birth Foretold

How encouraging to look at the birth of Jesus and see that there was a certainty given to the generations before Him that he’d come. (The Gift of Certain Hope - Susie Holt).
