Momentum: Pursuing God’s Blessings Through The BeatitudesPrimjer
How Sinners Find Comfort
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
1. Ask God for total forgiveness.
“Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities” (Psalm 51:9). God knows who you are and what you’ve done, but in love he says, “I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). The question is not “Have I done enough to be forgiven?” but “Has Christ done enough?” The answer is YES!
2. Ask God for a clean heart.
“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:2). Sin brings pollution into the human heart. It makes the sinner unclean. David knew this, so he says, “Create in me a clean heart” (Psalm 51:10). Give me a heart that hates what I once loved.
3. Ask God for a renewed spirit.
Satan tries to keep your sin hidden from you, but if he can’t do this, he’ll use the weight of your sin to try and crush you. When Satan tempts you to sin, he tells you “There’s no harm in it.” But once you’ve fallen into sin, he tells you “There’s no hope for you!” But the devil is a liar, so ask God to “renew a right spirit” (Psalm 51:10) in you.
4. Ask God for a useful life.
“God works in all things for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28 NIV). This includes your sins and failures. God’s greatest work in your life may begin at the point of your greatest failure. When Satan tempted you, he meant it for your destruction, but God can use it for your everlasting good. That’s the power of redeeming love. It’s what God does through the cross.
