Jesus Faces Pilate
1Then  # 23:1–5 Mt 27:1,11–14; Mk 15:1–5; Jn 18:28–38 their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate. 2They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes  # 23:2 Lk 20:22–25 to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”
3So Pilate asked him,  # 23:3 Mt 27:11; Mk 15:2 “Are you the king of the Jews? ”  # 23:3 Mt 2:2; Lk 23:37–38; Jn 18:39; 19:3
He answered him, “You say so.”   # 23:3 Or “That is true.”
4Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds  # 23:4 Mt 27:24; Lk 23:14,22; Jn 19:4,6; 1Pt 2:22 for charging this man.”
5But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people,  # 23:5 Ac 17:5–8,13 teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee  # 23:5 Mt 4:12,23; Lk 4:14; Jn 1:43; 2:11 where he started even to here.”
Jesus Faces Herod Antipas
6When Pilate  # 23:6 1Tm 6:13 heard this,  # 23:6 Other mss read heard “Galilee” he asked if the man was a Galilean. 7Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,  # 23:7 Lk 3:1; 9:7–9; 13:31 who was also in Jerusalem during those days. 8Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle  # 23:8 Or sign performed by him. 9So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.  # 23:9 Is 53:7; Mt 27:12,14; Mk 15:4–5; Jn 19:9 10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked  # 23:11 Is 53:3; Mk 9:12; Lk 18:32; Ac 4:11 him, dressed him in bright clothing,  # 23:11 Mt 27:28; Mk 15:17 and sent him back to Pilate. 12That very day Herod and Pilate became friends.  # 23:12 Lit friends with one another,# 23:12 Ps 2:2; Ac 4:27 Previously, they had been enemies.
Jesus or Barabbas
13Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,  # 23:13 Lk 23:35; 24:20; Jn 7:26,48; 12:42 14and said to them, “You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people.  # 23:14 Lk 23:2 But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds  # 23:14 Lk 23:4 to charge this man with those things you accuse him of. 15Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16Therefore, I will have him whipped  # 23:16 Gk paideuo; to discipline or “teach a lesson”,# 23:16 Jn 19:1; Ac 5:40 and then release him.”  # 23:16 Some mss include v. 17: For according to the festival he had to release someone to them.
18Then  # 23:18–23 Mt 27:15–23; Mk 15:6–14; Jn 18:40 they all cried out together, “Take this man away!  # 23:18 Ac 21:36; 22:22 Release Barabbas to us! ” 19(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)
20Wanting to release Jesus,  # 23:20 Ac 3:13–14 Pilate addressed them again, 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify! Crucify him! ”
22A third time he said to them, “Why? What has this man done wrong?  # 23:22 Jn 8:46 I have found in him no grounds  # 23:22 Lk 23:4 for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him.”
23But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified, and their voices  # 23:23 Other mss add and those of the chief priests won out. 24So  # 23:24–25 Mt 27:24–26; Mk 15:15; Jn 19:16 Pilate decided to grant their demand  # 23:24 Php 4:6 25and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.  # 23:25 Lk 24:20; Ac 4:24–28
The Way to the Cross
26As  # 23:26–32 Mt 27:31–32; Mk 15:20–21; Jn 19:17 they led him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian,  # 23:26 Rm 16:3 who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross  # 23:26 Lk 9:23; 14:27 on him to carry behind Jesus. 27A large crowd of people followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting him.  # 23:27 Lk 8:52; Ac 8:2; Rv 1:7; 18:9 28But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem,   # 23:28 Sg 1:5; 2:7 do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children. 29Look, the days are coming   # 23:29 Lk 17:22 when they will say, ‘Blessed are the women without children, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed! ’   # 23:29 Mt 24:19; Mk 13:17; Lk 11:27; 21:23 30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us! ’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us! ’   # 23:30 Hs 10:8,# 23:30 Hs 10:8 31For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? ”   # 23:31 Ezk 20:47; Lk 19:41
