Colton Dixon: More of You
Ever heard someone say, “I just want to be filled with Jesus!”? Or maybe you’ve said that yourself? Ever wondered what that ACTUALLY means? It’s funny, sometimes we throw around these phrases and don’t actually know how to do what we’re saying.
Think of your bedroom at home (if you’re a parent, think of your child’s room – it will make much more sense!); you’ve got a bed, maybe some furniture, maybe a desk, and clothes….yes, clothes everywhere! Now let's say, you’ve been given a fully loaded credit card, and you’re being sent on a shopping spree! New clothes, new bed, maybe a big TV for the wall, video games, computer, a guitar, you name it – it’s yours! In order to actually bring this stuff home, you’re going to have to clear out some older stuff.
All of a sudden, the stuff that used to take up all the space in the room, is not nearly as awesome as the stuff you’re bringing home. It’s going to require letting go of some of the old stuff, and bringing in something new (or else you’d have no space to move in the room!).
This story in Mark 10 is interesting because, though the situation seems opposite, the problem is quite similar. A rich person meets Jesus, and wants Jesus to be part of his life, but is unwilling to make room for Jesus. You see his wealth, his status, his stuff, meant everything to him. He was unwilling to swap it out, for all the joy and fulfillment Jesus could bring. What he missed was that Jesus was able to give him things that his money and wealth could never bring, but he wasn’t willing to let go of the “old stuff”.
In our lives, sometimes we miss out on what Jesus wants to do in us, because we’re content with all the old things that take up “space” in our lives. If you truly want more of God in your life, it’s going to require letting go of some of the old things, to allow new things to flourish. Maybe it’s a relationship, maybe it’s a bad habit, or maybe it’s an area of sin that you are struggling to give up.
Trust me though, the reward of having more of Jesus, is far greater than anything this world could offer you.
