Closeness With God

DAY 1 OF 5

> Closeness With God

There is a Jewish concept referring to closeness with God called Devekut (Pronounced: De Vah Koot). It also means to cling to, cleave to, or attachment to God.

Rabbi Shefa Gold describes the practice of Devekut as, “the continual remembrance of God that leads us past the edge of what can be expressed through words.”

It’s that spiritual intimate feeling you sometimes get in prayer or the study of Scripture or acting out the Commandments. There have been many times when I have been reading the Scriptures and have had a profound sense of God being close and intimate. It doesn’t happen everytime I read the Bible but gee I cherish those moments.

It’s a road to Emmaus feeling where the disciples exclaimed to one another, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he spoke to us on the road!” (Luke 24:32)

Here are some other references in the Scriptures to Devekut:

“But all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today” (Deut‬ ‭4‬:‭4,‬ ‭NIV‬‬).

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked” ‭‭(1 Timothy‬ ‭1:19,‬ ‭NLT).‬‬

John‬ ‭15:4‬, ‭NLT‬‬ Jesus says,‭‭ “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”

Devekut - (De Vah Koot)

  • To cling or bind yourself to God.
  • A full expression of life.
  • More aware of God’s Presence in everyday life, whether the situation is good or bad.

It’s the ability to restrain yourself from things that harm you (or others) and progress to fullness by clinging to Jesus. A kind of restraining progress!

We will use the next 4 days to look at these four aspects of faithfulness as the key elements of trusting Jesus.

Note: If you’re doing this Study Plan with friends, write your thoughts in the chat so you can grow and learn together.

Prayer:

Jesus, I know You fill the whole Earth with Your Presence but today I’m asking if You would kindly fill the space around me with Your Presence. I want to enjoy intimate friendship with You as I study the Scriptures and spend time in prayer. I want to be on a journey so I can be like You and do the things You do. Let it be so, Amen.
