Embodied Doxology
And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” (v. 5)
Revelation 21-22 describes what it means to believe in the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Our future hope isn’t that we’ll be whisked up to heaven and live for all eternity as disembodied souls. God is bringing heaven down to earth, where he himself will dwell with his people in bright radiance and where his glory will flood the earth. Salvation is not escape from this world; it’s God’s complete restoration of this world. We will spend eternity with God, in God’s new creation, with new bodies.
It’s this hopeful vision of the future that is intended to shape and direct our lives now. What you believe about the future determines how you live in the present. And since these bodies and this world in which we live will not ultimately be destroyed but renewed, we are called to live out this embodied hope here and now.
This is a call to glorify God in our bodies, to use our gifts to build up Christ’s body, to seek justice and dignity for all bodies, to care for creation and bear witness to our faith, and to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice—an embodied doxology that sings praise to the God who raised Jesus from the dead. We are to be, in the words of Augustine, “an alleluia from head to foot!” Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
