Hide and Seek: Opening Up to God and Others

DAY 2 OF 3

Day 2: A God Who Seeks

Yesterday, we talked about how we all have a tendency to hide parts of ourselves. Sometimes, the things we hide are small—other times, they’re pretty big. There are lots of reasons we might hide from the people around us, like pride or a fear of burdening others. We wrapped up Day 1 by recognizing that, while hiding might seem easier in the short term, eventually, it isolates us from other people. And that’s not a good space for us to be in.

The good news is that God knows this about us. He knows we need His support, and the support of others, too. And this means that when we try to hide, He seeks us out.

We see Him do this all the way back in Genesis, when Adam and Eve ate from the tree and chose to hide from God. He called out for them, seeking them until He found them.

God does this again and again over the course of the Old Testament. In Psalm 139, the psalmist describes how there is no place we can go away from God’s Spirit. Even if we were to ascend to the heavens or go down into the depths of the sea, God would be there, His presence close at hand. No matter what we’re going through, God wants to support us.

God seeks us because He loves us. It’s this love that led Jesus to the cross. Without Jesus’ sacrifice, an eternal separation would have always remained between us and God. But because of Jesus’ death and resurrection? He made a way for us to be found and enjoy eternal communion with our Heavenly Father.

And guess what? God is still seeking you, right now.

If you’ve never made the choice to follow Jesus, God is calling you to take that step. By being honest with God about how you need His help and asking Him to save you and make you new, you’ll never be separated from God again.

But being found doesn’t stop there. Whether you’re new to faith or you’ve been following Jesus for decades, there are always ways you can be more honest with God (and people) about what you’re going through. But that’s a discussion that can wait until tomorrow. Until then, spend time with this reflection and prayer.

Reflection: In what ways have you experienced God “seeking” you over the course of your life? What does this kind of dedication tell you about who God is?

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your great love for us. No matter how lost we may feel, You’re always close by, and You always desire to know us better. Will You show me how I can open myself up to You more today? Thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
