How to Overcome Fear

DAY 2 OF 3

What Are You Really Afraid Of?

If you’re driving to work on icy roads, you probably should feel some level of fear. Why? Why would we be afraid of frozen water on the road? Because we know what even a little ice can do to a fast-moving vehicle.

Yesterday we identified what we’re afraid of. Maybe it’s a bad diagnosis, failing to achieve success, or a future relationship hurt. No matter what it is, it matters.

Now let’s explore what lies beneath our fears and figure out what we’re truly afraid of at a deeper level. For example, when someone says they’re afraid of mountain lions, what they’re really saying is that they’re afraid of becoming cat food.

In the same way, when someone has a fear of public speaking, what they’re really afraid of is being embarrassed or seen as a failure.

Let’s look at a few more examples: People are afraid of starting a new relationship because they fear being rejected, hurt, or finding out their date has a concerning hobby. And people fear a bad diagnosis because they fear death or not being able to provide for their families.

Your fears are real, and so are God’s power, care, and compassion. When we pay closer attention to our fears and start to understand them, we discover their root—and then we can begin to fight fear with God’s promises. As we bring our fears to God, His truth starts to bring us peace.

God calls us accepted and loves us exactly as we are. He’s never far away from us, and never rejects us. He promises to provide what we need. He is our strength, our rock, and our fortress.

So today, create a moment of stillness to name your fears and ask yourself what’s really behind them. Then, remind yourself of who God is—your provider, protector, and ever-present help in times of trouble. Fear won’t go away automatically, but the more we focus on God’s power and love, the less chance fear has to take over.

A Prayer in a Time of Fear

God, I know my fears are real, but I also know You are greater. Help me to understand what I’m truly afraid of and to trust You with it. Remind me of Your love, strength, and promises. When fear tries to control me, help me listen to Your truth instead. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge: When fear feels overwhelming, turning to prayer can help us refocus on God’s strength and presence. If you’re looking for words to pray, check out this article with powerful prayers for strength and hope.
