To Be Like Him

When God created us in His image as male and female, as stated in Genesis 1:26, He desired and purposed for humans to be like Him. The reflection of His image in our lives should be displayed through His love, His character, and living in fulfillment of His purposes. The love shared within the Trinitarian relationship is the same love God intends for us to share with one another. But aren’t we far from His expectations?

So, what does it take to be like Him?

Firstly, to be like Him requires an intimate relationship with God. The Lord created us, human beings, to share and enjoy a deep, intimate love with the triune God. We are a product of Their oneness and intimacy. The Trinitarian God, who is the first family in the Old Testament, shared deep love among Themselves and modeled love for us, human beings. We can only love one another as the Godhead does when we fulfill the purpose for which He created us: our intimacy with God. Can we evaluate ourselves in the light of His intentions for us? How close and intimate are we with God?

Secondly, to achieve the intimacy He purposed for us, we must constantly examine our lives in light of who God is. His nature, compassion, and love can only become part of us when we yield ourselves to Him and His purposes. It is essential to evaluate whether we are growing in His nature, which is achievable by living with a constant awareness of His presence.

Even as I reflect, I know I am still a long way from being like Him. Yet, like Paul, I resolve to press on toward the goal for which Christ took hold of me.

As we continue to reflect and journey together over the next 40 days, let us meditate on the question, “How much am I like Him?” With this theme as the backdrop of our devotions, we will study and reflect on the attributes of the Trinitarian God, in whose likeness we are called to grow. As we prayerfully begin, may we desire to be like Him in the ways He reveals to us.

By becoming like Him, our lives can overflow with His attributes and character in all our relationships.

Prayer

Lord, as we watch, pray, and meditate on your character each day, may our lives become more refined to be like yours. Let the beauty of Jesus shine through me to my own family first and to others around me.
