Failure Is Not Final

DAY 1 OF 7

6 Misunderstandings about failing

Misunderstandings surrounding failure can make it hard to overcome and to use your failures to your advantage. Here are some of the misconceptions:

1) Failure is avoidable. It is possible to avoid certain failures, but we all fail sooner or later. In our attempt to avoid failure altogether, we may end up doing nothing for fear of failing. It is human to fail.

2) Failure is personal. Too often, people personalize failure. “I am a failure. I could have done better. It is because I am a failure that I have failed. Failure is inevitable because I am a failure.” The reality is that you will fail from time to time because you are human, not because there is something inherently wrong with you. Don't allow failure to form part of your identity. Read Luke 12:6-7.

3) To fail is the enemy. This is not true. Instead of seeing failure as the enemy, rather evaluate how you can do things better next time. Failure is often a protective mechanism that stops us from doing things that we are not supposed to be doing. The motivation behind our "doing" frequently stems from our desire to prove ourselves. At the end of the day, many of the things that we pursue are not in line with God's will for us. We may also pursue things that require skills that stretch beyond our ability. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you to be realistic about what you can and cannot do.

4) Failure is final and irreversible. This may be true in some cases, but most of the time, failure is not final or irreversible. This doesn't mean that you won't fail repeatedly at times. Certain things require you to try again and again in different ways until you succeed and manage to sharpen your technique.

5) Failure leaves me with a stigma. The only time a stigma is attached to failure is when you are viewing it through the wrong lens. If you utilize your failures to help you progress, you may find that they become your friend.

6) Failure and mistakes shouldn’t be avoided. Instead, they should be welcomed, embraced, and cherished. This extreme and often careless attitude toward failure causes many people to suffer unnecessary pain and harm. It is wise to do everything in your power to be wise, live cautiously, and take responsibility for your life and your actions.
