Though He Slay Me

I’ve written quite a few devotionals, but let me be honest – this one was difficult for me to write. It began in a place of repentance—repentance for missed opportunities and the weight of my own letdowns. Have you ever been there? When the burden of disappointment feels so heavy, and then, upon realizing you’ve been stuck in it, you become even more discouraged? It’s a never-ending cycle.

But don’t you just love God? How He has this beautiful way of turning even the most distraught places into a birthing ground for hope? He does this so often, and whether you're currently in a similar place of recognition, whether you agree with Him, feel let down by Him, or aren’t sure how to feel about Him or the state of your life right now, my hope is that the next few days will deeply encourage your heart and point every circumstance back to Him.

The truth is, He is in complete control, and whether we like it or not, our lives are a testament to that reality. You and I are no strangers to the heart-wrenching, uncomfortable feeling of not being in control. And neither were countless people in the Bible. Over the next few days, we will look at some of these individuals—how they faced and managed their struggles, how it led to surrender, and ultimately how each of them experienced victory—whether expected or otherwise.

My prayer for you is that, like me, you will approach the next few days with an open heart, an open mind, and a simple prayer: "God, show me myself and show me You in my current circumstances." I believe that, as Psalm 51:17 says, God will not despise a broken and contrite heart. When we’re honest with Him in prayer, He is faithful to meet us exactly where we are.
