[Songs of Praise] Bookends of Majesty

DAY 1 OF 3

The God of Majesty

The majesty of God, as depicted in Psalm 8, gives us a framework to find the divine purpose for our lives.

Psalm 8 begins with a unique superscription, “To the Chief Musician on the instrument of Gath.” This can refer to the city of Gath, home to Goliath. However, Al-hagittith, the word in Hebrew, can also be translated as “the winepress.” Psalm 8 could be called “the song of the winepress,” where humans have the privilege of engaging with something God created: pressing grapes to make wine. A winepress shows how pressure can reveal a beautiful purpose, symbolizing how God has placed us in a specific place in this life. The Holy Spirit in us influences the world around us, and one day, we will see how God magnified even our smallest actions into something marvelous.

The first phrase of Psalm 8, “O Lord, our Lord,” in Hebrew is Yahweh Adonai. Yahweh signifies “the covenant-keeping God of Israel,” and Adonai means “Lord.” By praising God by His name, David is extolling Him for His faithfulness to Israel. Despite historical challenges, God has never abandoned Israel and remains committed to fulfilling His promises. This commitment extends to all creation, showcasing His character and nature through His name. As David put it: “How excellent is Your name in all the earth!”

God has established His glory above the heavens. The sky reveals His creativity, order, beauty, and infinite majesty. Each element of creation, from sunsets to starry skies, visibly expresses His character, generosity, grace, mercy, and power. The order of creation, from the Genesis account to the present, reflects God’s meticulous nature.

Psalm 8:2 says, “Out of the mouths of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength.” Even the weakest of all can demonstrate God’s strength and wisdom. Children’s simplicity often confounds the wise, reflecting divine truths. For example, children’s letters to God frequently contain profound insights and pure expressions of faith. One child wrote, “Dear God, thank you for my baby brother, but what I asked for was a puppy.” This child showed an understanding of God’s provision. Another wrote, “Dear God if You watch in church on Sunday, I’ll show You my new shoes.” This letter reflects a personal relationship with God, a real friendship with Him. Through the faith of innocent children, God silences His enemies.

Father, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! You have made us strong, even the smallest of us! May my praise to You silence the enemy forever!

About this Plan

[Songs of Praise] Bookends of Majesty

In this final plan in the Songs of Praise Series, join Dr. Mark Rae to look at a psalm that may summarize all the others: Psalm 8. In its nine wonderful verses, we see David extol and praise God in all His glory; God’s plan for creation in His Son; and renewed praise for who God is.
