Words We'll Sing Forever: A 4-Day Devotional

DAY 1 OF 4

Fun fact: we’re all foreigners.

The cities we live in, the people we’re around, the places we stay; none of it is actually our final destination. None of it is what we were really made for. None of it is really our home. In the words of the apostle Peter, we are all “sojourners and exiles.”

If you’re on this app reading this devotional, you probably know where I’m going with this. Paul tells us, “Our citizenship is in heaven.” That is the place where we were made to live. That aching feeling you have in your heart? That’s homesickness for our true home. The longing we feel in this life? It’s our restless soul pining for where we were made to be.

I can’t wait for Heaven.

At one point, the thought of dying really scared me, and I wanted to delay it as much as possible. But the Lord has grown in me that desire for Heaven, and I pray that He grows it in you as well. Heaven is going to be amazing.

There’s going to be no tears, no mourning, no pain, no sadness.

There’s going to be dancing and joy and gladness and peace and beauty.

And lots and lots and lots of Worship.

I’m a worship leader, and I feel like I’ve been a part of some pretty heavenly times of worship. But I know that nothing I’ve ever seen will even come close to what we’re going to experience in Heaven. If I think that worship down here is an encounter with God, I can’t wait for when we get to do it face to face with the God of the Universe. It excites and terrifies me at the same time.

I love scripture passages that give us a little glimpse of what Heaven is going to be like. My two biggest takeaways:

  1. There are lots of weird images (eyes everywhere, wings on wings on wings, and creatures galore), and
  2. There is lots of singing. Night and day. All the time. All the different kinds of creatures.

And in my reading of scripture, I’ve noticed an interesting commonality in these glimpses of Heaven, both in Old and New Testament:

In Heaven, they sing the same words over and over again.

Most common word in Heaven? “Holy.” Followed really closely by “Worthy.” And lots of talk about “Glory” as well.

Curious. These beings have so much knowledge and revelation, know millions and millions of words, and the ones they go back to so often are “Holy”, “Worthy,” and “Glory”?

I think there’s a lot to learn from this. I recently put out a song called “Words We’ll Sing Forever” and it’s my attempt at joining in with this Song from Heaven. But I hope in these next few days to uncover even more; both for you and for myself! What do these words really mean, and how do they help me be more like Jesus? Stay tuned to find out!

In the meantime, spend some time praying and meditating on the two scriptures mentioned: about us being sojourners here and citizens in Heaven. Here are some things to think about:

  1. What does it mean to you to be a foreigner to this world? What are ways we try to fit in or conform? Does it feel natural or emptying?
  2. What does it mean to you to be a citizen of Heaven? How would you live differently if you really knew that was your home?
  3. Who are people in your life who have made this world their home? How can you be Jesus to them?
  4. Who are people who understand that Heaven is their home? How can you learn from them?
