A Friend to Others

Living the Christian life isn’t always easy.

And no one knew that better than the apostle Paul. Throughout his missionary life, he was imprisoned, beaten, had rocks thrown at him, and was pretty much hated by a lot of people (see 2 Corinthians 11:18-29).

He knew what it was to feel disheartened.

I bet that most of us don’t know what it feels like to be in the situations Paul was in, but we do know what it feels like to be disheartened.

Situations like family struggles, job loss, unexpected expenses, health challenges, or other situations create a sense of helplessness, and we can lose heart.

Add to this our own anxieties, depression, or other emotions, and you end up in a pretty discouraged state.

But what did Paul do in his situation?

He became a man of encouragement.

Instead of sitting in his emotional state, he found a way to invest in the believers around him and encourage them to continue in their faith.

And by doing so, he found the encouragement he needed to get up every morning and keep going in his own faith journey.

This week, we will examine different biblical men and learn from them how to equip ourselves to be men of encouragement and invest in those around us so that we can find what we need to get up each morning and continue in the faith.

But to start it off, my encouragement to you is to sit with the Lord this week, open your heart to His leading, and be ready to respond to what He has for you.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are with me in my discouragement. Help me learn more this week about how to see beyond myself and be a better man of encouragement to others. Amen.

Reflection: What does it feel like to be encouraged? Think about ways to give that same strength to someone else, and then go do it.
