How God Can Answer Prayers

Have you ever heard the old story of the drowning man?

A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help. Soon, a man in a rowboat came by, and the fellow shouted at the man on the roof, “Jump in. I can save you.” The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK. I’m praying to God, and he will save me.” So the rowboat went on. Then, a motorboat came by. The fellow in the motorboat shouted, “Jump in, I can save you.” The stranded man said to this, “No thanks, I’m praying to God, and he is going to save me. I have faith.” So the motorboat went on. Then, a helicopter came by, and the pilot shouted, “Grab this rope, and I will lift you to safety.” The stranded man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God, and he is going to save me. I have faith.” So, the helicopter reluctantly flew away. Soon, the water rose above the rooftop, and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you, but you didn’t save me; you let me drown. I don’t understand why!” To this, God replied, “I sent you a rowboat, motorboat, and helicopter; what more did you expect?”

If you broke your leg and prayed to God for healing, would you decline a cast?

If you had an infection and prayed to God for healing, would you refuse an antibiotic?

If you were diagnosed with cancer and prayed to God for healing, would you reject a treatment that showed tremendous promise?

If you answered "no" to any of these, then why would you decline treatment for a mental health challenge? For some, that might be talk therapy. For others, it might be medication. And for some, it could involve innovative, drug-free treatments.

Throughout this study, we will map out a path for those struggling with mental health who may hesitate to seek treatment, believing prayer alone should suffice. We’ll explore how God answers prayers in diverse ways, including giving humanity the wisdom to use the resources He has placed on this earth to care for our physical and mental well-being.

Additionally, we will delve into Scripture to see how mental health is health, affirming that no one is too broken for God. He has performed, and continues to perform, miracles in the lives of those battling depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health struggles.
