Gone Fishin'
That Truck Scares Me!
At the base of the steep incline a short distance from our home, I came across a jogger on her way up. I yelled, "Way To Go!" She said, "Don't worry, I'll be walking in a hundred yards!" I caught up with her.
We chatted about COVID, her work, the humidity, and... a semitrailer without the truck at the top of the hill. It looked like it could break loose from its stand and come our way. She said, "That really scares me. But, I scare easily." She pulled out a wrench and mace to prove it!!
I said, "Well, at least you're prepared! Personally, I came to a point in my life where I decided to trust God about things out of my control. For example, I once had a foul mouth and a bad temper. But, it turned out God changed me." (Gracious me! I couldn't believe I just said that!)
She said, "But you would have changed over time." I said, "No, I had already given up hope. I just couldn't stop in my own willpower. It was an amazing change. She joked, "Well, my ex was like you, and now that he's re-married, he's all sweet. She got version 2.0. I was stuck with version 1.0." We laughed. That was a good one!
And we came to a fork in the road.
As she got a phone call, I told her I'd best take the short way home as I'd told my wife I'd only be 30 min. So we parted. As I walked I was considering whether to speak this experience into my notes. After all, if I don't get to pray with or share the Gospel, I can still shine my light, right!?
But about 10 minutes later I heard her behind me.
Her client asked her to go home and help him use her computer. So we chatted until getting to the front of our home. I was able to assist her technically since I have the mobile app MemLok. She was grateful and asked, "So, what is the memory system all about?"
I had picked up on her issue with anxiety, so I explained: "The system helps families and individuals teach principles that can change their lives. It has 48 topics, including ones that deal with anxiety. Wouldn't it be great if we had God's wisdom, ideas, and strength as we dealt with issues? Then, we could think, talk, and act more like Him!" She smiled.
I said, "Even if you don't memorize, you still have a dozen verses on Trust for example (anxiety's antidote) on your phone. What a joy to be able to look those over anywhere, anytime, right?" She said, "Cool!"
As we stood in the street in front of our home, I said, "A, would it be alright if I prayed with you?" She said, "Yes."
Reader, would you pray along with me right now? This is what I prayed.
"Dear Lord God, thank you for letting A and me meet this morning. Thank you for the big hill. What a gift it's right here near our homes since she can't go to the gym these days. Thank you for giving A the ability to help customers solve their problems and make them happy. And Lord, A and I would love for you to do something really neat for her. Give her Your strength to deal with the things that cause her to be anxious. We ask this in Jesus' Name."
I said I had to get going and she said, "Thank you! We'll talk again because I walk by your home every day. Did you ever see me rub your artificial turf to see if it was real?"
See what happened there? I was going to take a quick 30-minute walk. I could have just watched the runner go by. Or waved. Or said, "How are you?" Instead, the Lord is teaching me to be intentional. And notice, later, she ran to catch back up with me, to talk more!
This is all because I decided to go out of my way and walk further (more time). We have a mission. People need Jesus!
Seven people went out of their way to share the Gospel with me before I became a follower of Jesus at age 21. God is amazing!
