Peace Over Anxiety

DAY 3 OF 3

The Peace That Guards

Scripture:

9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. - Philippians 4:9 ESV

Devotional:

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Philippian church from prison. He lived what He wrote. He writes about rejoicing in God and finding peace whilst shackled up in a tiny prison cell. He surrounded himself with the truths of God, remembered His promises, and encouraged others to do the same. What a wonderful example for us to follow.

For many of us, anxiety and depression feel like inescapable prisons. But what if we followed Paul’s example? What if we chose to rejoice in the Lord, train our minds, and surround ourselves with people who are a great example of Jesus? Imagine the difference it could make to have friends who support you and speak life into your struggles, remind you of God's faithfulness, and encourage you to take even the smallest steps forward in faith.

Our company shapes our focus. Are your friends and the people you regularly spend time with leading you toward the peace of God or away from it? Take time today to evaluate this. Are their voices encouraging you to trust in Jesus when life feels overwhelming?

The God of peace is available to us. Paul reminds us that we must practice the truths we've learned and seek out those who live by them. Together, we can remind each other of God's presence and the peace that surpasses understanding.

Questions:

  • How can following Paul’s example of rejoicing in God and remembering His promises help us navigate feelings of anxiety and depression?
  • Who in your life is a great example of Jesus, and how can you spend more intentional time with them to grow in faith?
  • Are the people and influences in your life drawing you closer to the peace of God or distracting you from it? What changes might you need to make in your circle of friends?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being the God of peace in every circumstance. Help me to practice what I’ve learned about You. Help me to choose to rejoice in You, train my mind and surround myself with people who love and reflect your character. In moments of anxiety and depression, teach me to rely on Your presence and promises. Lead me to be a friend who points others to You as well. Amen.
