I Love Jesus: 11-Day Devotional by Mac Powell

DAY 9 OF 11

Sometimes it’s hard to trust that God has not failed you.

There are often circumstances in our lives that don’t feel or seem good. Maybe you are sick or have a family member who has walked away from the faith. Maybe you have a financial strain in your life.

There are many things that we can be going through that bring pain, heartache, and doubt in our lives.

But, even in those times, know that God is good and longs to hold us and help us.

God never promised that every situation in life would be good. He only promises that he is good and that he will always be there with us in the fire.

A challenge for you today: take one minute to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and cry out to Jesus. Thank him for what he has done in your life, and ask for him to help you now.

There’s a great saying within the church that I remind myself of when times are tough:

“God is good — all the time, all the time — God is good.”

This mentality is what inspired my song, “Nothing But Good.” The song is praising God for his faithfulness and kindness to me as a child of God.

Here are some of the lyrics:

Lord, you are so good

And this is my testimony

Lord, you are so good

This is my song, this is my story

From so far gone

To a child of God

A slave, but now I’m free

You ain’t ever been nothing but good to me

When reflecting on the idea of God’s goodness, I think back to Luke 18. There’s an interesting conversation between Jesus and a rich ruler.

Here’s how the conversation went:

The rich ruler says to Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replies, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.”

Sometimes, Jesus says some things that confuse me. I’m not always sure why he said certain phrases or what they mean.

In those times, I love digging deeper into the Scripture and history to find the treasure of Jesus’ words.

I think that it’s possible that when Jesus said this, everyone around who heard this conversation was probably a bit bewildered and confused. Because, of course, Jesus was and is good.

Jesus revealed his goodness in many ways:

  • He proved it in the miracles that his followers and disciples had seen and by the words that he said.
  • They had heard it in his teachings.
  • They witnessed it in the feeding of the 5,000. Through that miracle, Jesus was good in satisfying the hunger of so many men, women, and children.
  • Jesus showed himself good in reaching out to the least of these like the Samaritan woman at the well, the ones affected with leprosy, and the little children he let run to him.
  • Jesus established that he was good by healing the lame, blind, and sick, and raising the dead.

Of course, Jesus was good. So, why would he say only God is good?

He said this because clearly, Jesus is God.

In this conversation, Jesus was trying to tell the rich ruler that he wasn’t just a good teacher. Rather, he was and is our Creator, our King, and our God.

It’s a very interesting conversation that he has. And the reason that Jesus does good things is because he is good. That’s his character. It’s who he is.

He’s always been “Nothing But Good.”

There’s a great piece of Scripture in Psalm 136:1 where the Psalmist writes, “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

So, not only do we receive good things from God when we follow him, but we receive the ultimate gift of his love and his calling us to be his children.

As children of God, we should have the character of God and show the goodness that has been shown to us by feeding the hungry, helping to bring healing to the sick, and reaching out to the “least of these.”

Remember that God is good and is with you every step of the way, even when times are tough.

I hope that “Nothing But Good” encourages you today.
