A Family of Connection

DAY 1 OF 4

A family of connection listens to each other.

Listening is a skill that’s difficult for most of us because at least I had the habit of listening to respond rather than listening to listen. A family that listens to one another is like a well-tuned orchestra. In an orchestra, each musician must pay close attention to both the conductor and their fellow players. If even one person disregards the rhythm or plays out of sync, the harmony is lost. Similarly, in a family, each member must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Listening is essential for maintaining peace and unity.

When I’m rushing to speak or respond in anger, I often miss what the other person is truly saying. Scripture teaches that anger disrupts the righteousness that God desires in us. But when we take time to listen, with patience and humility, we create a space where understanding and love can grow. Like musicians following the conductor’s lead, families who listen to each other are guided by God’s wisdom and grace, which help them navigate difficult conversations and conflicts.

Proverbs warns us of the danger of isolating ourselves or only focusing on our own opinions. Just as an orchestra would fall apart if each musician played their own tune, a family suffers when individuals don’t take time to understand one another. Listening helps us connect, fostering an environment of mutual respect and support.

In a family, listening well is not just about hearing words, but about seeking to understand and respond with grace. When we do this, we reflect the harmony God desires for our homes, where love and unity can thrive.

Question for your family: When in your weekly rhythm can you focus on listening in your home?
