Don't Let Doubt Take You Out

DAY 1 OF 5

The Danger of Doubt

Doubt—it’s our common enemy. From your earliest memories, doubt was probably there. On the first day of school. Waiting for you on the playground, a word spoken, a look given. Doubt followed you throughout middle school and high school, exposing your insecurities and causing you to compare your failures to everyone else’s successes. When seeds of doubt get planted, they often produce the fruit of inadequacy, fear, and anxiety—all the while convincing you that you’re the only one struggling.

But doubt doesn’t just cause us to question our self-worth. It also seeps into our relationships. When the people closest to us let us down or disappoint us, doubt whispers in our ear, causing us to question their motives or their loyalty, tempting us to withdraw and isolate ourselves. Can I trust them? Will they hurt me again? When we listen to this voice of doubt, it becomes a destructive force that tries to ruin our relationships and diminish the quality of our life by robbing us of the joy found in vulnerability.

But doubt’s greatest damage is done in the supernatural. Doubt shouts the loudest when it comes to what we cannot see, touch, or quantify logically—attempting to disrupt any connection with our Creator and causing us to walk through life disjointed from the One who holds all of life together. Doubt can disintegrate the foundations of what we believe and cause us to deconstruct our faith and walk away from our God. Knowing how to defeat doubt before it takes you out is a critical skill that each of us must learn.

Doubt doesn’t have to be a lid on our opportunities, a restraint on our relationships, or a disruptor to our connection with God. Instead, doubt can be an indicator. A warning signal. Like the light on your dashboard alerting you that your engine oil is low, doubt indicates that something needs to be addressed.

We can learn how to deal with doubt. All throughout God’s Word we see men and women who did not let their doubt take them out. They worked through it. They modeled how to navigate times of fear, anxiety, and lack of faith. People like Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt, even though he questioned his abilities. Or Gideon, who went from a frightened farm boy to a national hero as he stepped out of his comfort zone and into his calling. Or Joseph, who allowed his doubts and disappointments to develop his character.

What did these ordinary people have that we can access today? I believe they all learned one skill—how to leverage doubt and allow it to deepen their dependence on God. By staying rooted in God—through Scripture, prayer, community, and worship—we can navigate our doubts to deepen our trust in God and strengthen our faith. You might be facing some discouragements, delays, or detours that have led you to doubt. But here’s the good news—doubt doesn’t have to be a dead end. It can be a doorway—to deeper faith, greater courage, and more intimate relationships.

Prayer: God, thank you for welcoming my questions and doubts. Help me to grow closer to you. Help me deal with doubt in a way that strengthens my faith and deepens my relationships with you and with others. Give me the wisdom and courage I need to step into all that you have for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
