How do you pray when life feels overwhelming?

Today’s reading is about a prayer from the book of Habakkuk.

Habakkuk’s prayer is breathtaking. Facing devastation, he doesn’t pretend things are fine or try to fix it himself. Instead, he looks to God’s mighty works in history. He recalls how God delivered His people in the past, trembling yet trusting in God’s unshakable power. His prayer crescendos into a stunning declaration: even if the fig tree doesn’t blossom, the flocks vanish, and disaster strikes, “yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”

Habakkuk’s prayer points us to Jesus, who prayed with the same resolute trust in the Garden of Gethsemane. Facing the cross, He didn’t shrink back. He surrendered, trusting the Father’s perfect plan, even while going through unimaginable suffering.

In troubled times, prayer doesn’t always bring immediate relief. But it anchors us to God’s faithfulness and reminds us that joy isn’t found in circumstances—it’s found in the God who saves.
