His Name Shall Be Called

DAY 4 OF 7

MIGHTY GOD

It’s impossible to turn on the TV or scroll through your phone without seeing how fragile and tenuous the world is. It seems that everywhere you turn there is violence, wars, rumors of wars, natural devastation, political unrest, hatred, inflation, and an unsteady economy.

Perhaps in your own life, you feel weak and powerless in your pain and sorrow. Maybe it is sickness or disease in your body, a broken relationship, the betrayal of a friend, the loss of a dream, the death of a loved one, difficulty finding work and making ends meet, a struggle with addiction, sadness over infertility, a prodigal child, a difficult marriage or a fleeting hope to be married. Maybe you feel stuck in habitual sin, and you desire to change, but nothing you try seems to help. Maybe it’s a situation beyond your control, or you have been wounded by the choices of another person.

When it feels like our needs are too many, and all hope is lost, or at least some distant reality, Scripture reminds us of what is true.

1 Chronicles 29:11 tells us, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.”

This means that God is sovereign over everything you face in life. There is no circumstance God does not have control over. There is no area of your life He has overlooked. There is no trial too small or insignificant for Him to intervene in. There is no chain too strong that He cannot break, and no weapon formed against you that will prosper. There is no enemy strong enough to snatch you from His mighty hand. He delights in defending the weak, the downtrodden, and the marginalized.

For He is the mighty God, strong and powerful.

God made Himself nothing, becoming a child, and exposing Himself to the tumultuous world for one reason- to overcome it!

We stood condemned and powerless in our sin, yet Jesus took it upon Himself, nailed it to the cross, died in our place, and walked out of the tomb, disarming all powers and wicked authorities over us. Then He sat down at God’s right hand where He continues to intercede and strengthen us in His ability through every situation we face.

The same power that brought Jesus from death to life is at work within us, changing us, and empowering us to follow Him.

We serve a living God constantly at work on our behalf, powerful enough to defend, heal, restore, set free, and deliver us, just as He did the Israelites from their oppression and captivity.

Our circumstances may not change, and the circumstances of this world may not change, but we have an unchanging God, a Mighty God, who is most strong when we are most weak.

Prayer

Thank you, Jesus, for being Mighty God. I believe your power is strong enough to help me overcome what I am going through. Thank you that I can give up control and trust you to move on my behalf. Amen.

About this Plan

His Name Shall Be Called

The names of God throughout scripture are essential in understanding His character and revealing the needs of His people. This seven-day devotional will take an in-depth look at each name and description the prophet Isaiah used for the coming Messiah, and why those names are just as important for us today as they were for the original audience. May it awaken our hearts to discover that God is everything we need and more!
