The Christ of Christmas

DAY 5 OF 25

Day 5: Jesus Fulfilled the Covenant

Jeremiah wrote this prophecy approximately 700 years before Jesus was born. In John 13:13, Jesus told His disciples, “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.”

Truly, Jesus is the Lord. When we talk about this title of His, it is important to understand what it means. When a human is given the title of “lord,” it means that they have authority, power, and dominion over their land. Jesus is the Lord of all lords. His rule is everlasting, and His territory is never ending. Everything that has ever been created is under His dominion and authority. God’s title of “Lord” found in the Old Testament is synonymous with His title of “Yahweh.” This wonderful name of God came from Moses’ encounter with Him at the burning bush. Moses asked God what he should tell the Israelites when they asked who Moses’ message came from. God told Moses to say, “I AM Who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). The title “I AM” in Hebrew is “Yahweh.” And Jesus is and was and will always be this same God. He was there in the beginning—from before Genesis to the creation of the world on to today and forever—Jesus reigns victoriously as Lord over all. The Bible gives Jesus two other names: King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 1:5).

The power of Jesus, the Lord of Lords, is portrayed vividly in the Bible, but perhaps one of my favorite passages is in Revelation, “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. [...] On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:11-12, 16).

What a glorious picture! And yet, the Lord of Lords gave up His throne in Heaven to be born as a baby. He took our sins upon Himself so we can stand blameless before the Father. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

So this Christmastime, let us hold in our hearts the deepest gratitude that our Lord Jesus came for us. And when Jesus was born, mankind received the greatest gift—the Lord, our Righteous Savior!

“Christ is the Lord,
Oh, praise His name forever!
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim!”
