4 Days to Growing Gratitude in Marriage

DAY 2 OF 4

Genesis 2 shows that God had specific plans and purposes for Adam and Eve. Adam’s work was to tend and watch over the Garden, helping to care for God’s own creation. But he was not left alone in this effort: God provided the gift of marriage to provide help and companionship. We see in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 that there is strength in relationships which we cannot muster alone. Standing together provides stability, and also provides for the basic human need for love.

From the start, we see that the needs that God created us with He also fulfills. We need companionship, and He provides. We need the ability to find meaning and purpose in life. He provides good work for us to carry out, as we serve our spouse, family, and community. Today, thank God for the gift of companionship He has provided through your marriage. Thank God that He created you on purpose and has a purpose for you and your marriage.

Where do you see God’s purpose in your life? Where do you see His purpose in the way he paired you and your spouse, with each of your unique gifts and talents? How has your life been enriched by marriage? What fruit do you see from your relationship? Thank God for the purpose He designed your marriage to fulfill, and for the ways you are able to minister to one another, to your family, your community, and the world around you.

As you consider your answers to these questions, take a few minutes to “give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20).

Next Step: Today, set 3 reminders on your phone to think of things you are thankful for. Take time to talk with your spouse today and share what you’re each thankful for about each other and your marriage.
