Day Four: Jesus in the Journey of Faith

Picture this: you've got Moses, the rockstar of the Old Testament, who was faithful as a servant in God’s house. He had some muff-ups, but ultimately Hebrews says he was faithful. If you’re a Jew, you adore Moses. Then, Jesus enters the story—the Son, not just in the house but over it. Hebrews 3 is basically saying, "Moses was great, but Jesus is the real MVP."

Paul kicks off by reminding us that Jesus is both the apostle and High Priest of our confession. It’s like he’s waving a flag saying, “Hey, don’t miss this!” Jesus is the one who perfectly represents us to God and is the fulfillment of everything Moses was pointing to. Remember that sacrificial system Moses set up? Yeah, Jesus is the ultimate High Priest, the culmination of it all. Jesus is God. He’s the entire point of Moses’ ministry.

The preacher is writing to Christians—people who share in a heavenly calling. That’s us, by the way. We are God’s house *if* we hold fast to our confidence and hope. This isn’t just about hanging on to some vague idea of hope. This hope is rock-solid because it’s anchored in Jesus, the one who’s already blazed the trail for us.

And what is hope? Hope is holding on to the promise of what's to come next through Jesus Christ and through Him alone. It’s about that promised rest, that ultimate destination where we’ll be in God’s presence forever. Paul draws a parallel between the Israelites’ journey to the Promised Land and our spiritual journey. Remember how the Israelites had this amazing promise but got tripped up by unbelief? They ended up wandering in the wilderness because they didn’t trust God to take them the last mile. The writer is waving the red flag here, saying, “Don’t be like them!”

Hebrews uses the powerful image of the Exodus as a foreshadowing of what’s to come. The Israelites saw all the miracles, but it wasn’t enough—they still fell into unbelief. And the preacher’s like, “Seeing isn’t believing, guys.” Faith comes by hearing, by listening to what God says, and holding on to that promise.

It’s about the daily resolve to live by what God has said, not by what we see or feel. When the road gets tough—and it will—don’t fall asleep at the wheel. Pull over, crank up the music, and remind yourself of the destination. Jesus has already gone ahead, and He’s waiting for us in that promised rest.
