A Year of Prayer: Season One Weekday Devotionals

DAY 29 OF 75

Doesn’t it always seem your torches lay around for years without being needed, and the batteries are dead by the time you use them? Perhaps you’ve tried the hand-pump battery torches, which seem to require the strength of The Hulk just to give off the weakest beam of light!

If you try a backup of candles, chances are you won’t be able to find the lighter or matches. Located at the bottom of many a ‘junk drawer,’ we have them on hand for emergencies, but when the emergency comes, we have to blindly rummage through six cm of rubbish just to try and find it!

Thank God for the phone light. Many of us may remember a time when blackouts, storms, and looking for things in basements and car parks were dreaded because all success was predicated on an unreliable light source.

How lucky are we to have the Lord, who is Light. John 8:12 says, ‘When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”' The first act of creation God outworked in Genesis was to make light. Genesis 1 says God waited, the Spirit hovered, and God spoke the word ‘Light.’

God waits for us, the Holy Spirit moves in us, and Jesus is the word made flesh who brings light to our whole selves. Matthew 6:22-23 says, '“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness."’ We are to be embodied light, like our Saviour.

Our creating, waiting, moving, light-speaking, and light-being God never wanes. God never runs out. God is never dark. God is always there, in and outside of emergency situations—and hopefully not buried under layers of our own relational rubbish to rummage through! Our life’s success is predicated on the most reliable source of light.

Prayer: Jesus, you are the light who speaks to me. Refresh our eyes to your power and light today in Jesus' name.

Action: Write the words ‘power’ and ‘strength’ in two separate columns. Write as many words associated with each as you can think of. Once you’re done, go back through and try to see what God has revealed to you about today’s scripture.
