I Trust in the Lord

If we’re being honest, there is much to fear in our world.

Some top Google results on common fears include corrupt government officials, economic collapse, nuclear war, loved ones getting sick or dying, snakes, spiders, heights, public speaking, identity theft, and flying.

Broadly and stereotypically, men are afraid of commitment to a relationship. We fear looking bad or foolish. We’re worried about our kids and our fathering. We’re scared we won’t measure up. We’re afraid of getting old. We worry about money. We’re terrified of going to the doctor because we’re scared of a bad diagnosis. We’re anxious our sin will find us out. We fear we don’t have what it takes.

Psalm 112:7 says, “They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” The “they” refers to those mentioned earlier in this Psalm—those who “fear the Lord” (Psalm 112:1).

The application is for Christian believers today who fear and follow the Lord. We’re called to have no fear of bad news, real or imagined, because we trust in the Lord, the One who loves us and is able to help us because His followers “will never be shaken” (Psalm 112:6).

Of course, many of the fears listed above can shake us up. Who wouldn’t be shaken when a loved one dies? Or divorce strikes your family? Or illness? Your humanity would be questioned if you’re not moved by tragic personal news!

But the big picture idea is that though fears are real, so too is the presence of our powerful and loving God. When bad news hits, God is there. Our hearts may fear, hurt, and grieve, but our hearts ultimately will be steadfast, trusting in the Lord (v. 7).

There will be pieces to pick up as we go through our trials, but our compassionate Father will be there for us through Jesus Christ our Lord, and the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, I don’t always understand how You work. But I believe that You are loving, and You understand my fears. I also believe You are willing and more than able to lift me up during my fears and struggles, which sometimes threaten to overwhelm me. Thank You for being the Rock upon which I stand. Amen.
