If you’ve been around church or faith-based spaces for any amount of time, you’ve likely heard the word “fellowship” used at some point in some way. Maybe you spent time in old-school “Fellowship Hall,” or you joined a Bible study for “fellowship” with others, or you attended gatherings designed for people to “fellowship” together. Sure, we’ve heard it, but do we really understand what it means?

Here, Paul’s words give us a better idea. Jesus made a way for us to enter a real, authentic relationship with God. And with that, when He left this Earth, He left us with the Holy Spirit, a Companion, and Helper, to walk alongside us in this world. So, when we have fellowship with the Holy Spirit, it means we have a deep friendship with Him. It’s more than just hanging out, sharing a meal, or spending time together. It’s about joining in life together. This is the depth of friendship we have with God in all forms, and this is the kind of relationship God invites us to have with others who are walking with Him in this life, too.

Talk to your small group about what real fellowship means to you. Brainstorm ways you can forge deep friendships and connections with one another as you walk through your spiritual life side by side.
