Prayer for Protection

We have a real enemy that wants you to disregard your marriage and let it crumble. We need to “stay alert” as 1 Peter 5:8-9 warns. Resist satan and “stand firm” in protection of your marriage.

Hebrews 13:4 places high value on marriage and emphasizes purity in marriage. This is something that does not happen by accident, but through praying for God’s protection, and taking care to protect your marriage.

Moving forward, what needs to be in place to protect your marriage from porn and other sexual sin? Here are some guidelines:

For the Recovering Spouse:

• Consistently update your accountability software and filters on all devices to prevent future access to pornography. This goes into staying alert, and will help you to stand firm as you protect your eyes and your marriage.
• Commit to complete transparency and honesty. Keep building trust through open communication.
• Continue to meet with an accountability partner or support group.
• Pray for God to help you be the spouse He created you to be.

For the Betrayed Spouse:

• Practice forgiveness and extend grace, while also maintaining your boundaries.
• Continue to grow in your relationship with God.
• Pray for God to help you be the spouse He created you to be.

For Both of You:

• Continue to periodically meet with your Christian marriage counselor to evaluate your marriage and give you things to work on to continue to improve your marriage.
• Prioritize quality time together. Connect emotionally and strengthen your marriage.
• Continued spiritual growth individually and as a couple through prayer, Bible study, and worship is essential.
• Commit to sexual purity and intimacy only within your marriage relationship. Pray for an “undefiled marriage” that Hebrews 13:4 calls us to.

Be patient with the healing process and celebrate small victories along the way.

The key is to rely on God's strength, seek wise counsel, rebuild trust gradually, and make your marriage and spiritual health the top priority going forward. With time, effort and God's grace, healing and restoration will happen.

Give us discernment to recognize temptation and the strength to resist it. Help us to be vigilant in guarding our marriage. When we face setbacks, give us the courage to keep fighting. Surround us with support and accountability. May our marriage be a testimony of your redeeming love and grace. In Jesus' name, Amen."
