Rooted in Worship

DAY 19 OF 28

1,440 Minutes to Worship

Why are you here on earth? What is your purpose? Why did God make you?

The answer is most definitely not that God “needed” you. God does not need anything or anyone. He is entirely self-sufficient. God does not need your money or the work you can provide. God doesn’t need anything from you. So, if he does not need anything from you, why did God create you?

To find an answer to these core questions, we need to go all the way back to the beginning. When God created Adam and Eve, he did not need them to tend the garden. Plants and animals can flourish on their own without our intervention.

Pastor and author John Mark Comer explains this distinction,

“When you think of Eden, don’t think of a public park with a lawn, a play set, and a flowerbed or two, where God hands Adam a lawnmower and says, ‘Keep it tidy, will ya?’ Think of a violent, untamed wilderness teeming with beauty, but no infrastructure, no roads, no bridges, no cities, no civilization, and God says, ‘Go make a world.’"
Adam wasn’t a landscape-maintenance employee. He was an explorer, a cartographer, a gardener, a designer, an architect, a builder, an urban planner, and a city-maker.”
-John Mark Comer, Garden City: Work, Rest, and the Art of Being Human

God made humans not because he needed to but because he wanted to. As the artist delights in creating a masterpiece, so God delighted in creating you. "For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago" (Ephesians 2:10).

God created you with roles and responsibilities within his creation because there is something in his heart that desires to share with you what he has made. As a parent enjoys watching their child color a picture, so our Lord enjoys watching his children steward his creation.

Why are you here? Because God wants you here and has great plans for your life!

God loves you so much that he has entrusted you with many things. He has given you a home or place to live, belongings, skills, a family, spiritual gifts, a job or service opportunities, and a geographical place on this earth to steward for His glory. We are stewards of God’s provision. We have been entrusted with much!

“Our job is to make the invisible God visible—to mirror and mimic what He is like to the world. We can glorify God by doing our work in such a way that we make the invisible God visible by what we do and how we do it.”
-John Mark Comer

Do you consider your life an adventure with God? Do you seek ways to expand his kingdom and invite more people to worship him?

God is at work throughout our world. He is at work in the open plains of Africa and the rugged mountains of North Korea. He is at work in the massive cities of China and the tiny villages in the Amazon. God is reaching people through visions and dreams and the testimonies of others. He is working through miracles and his Word. It will be a diverse kingdom, representative of the whole world. That’s so exciting! We will worship God with people from every country, tribe, language, and profession.

Think about this for a moment. At one point in your family history, your ancestors were far from God. Whether that was two hundred years ago or two years ago, God reached out and invited you to join him. He gave his one and only Son because he loves you! Don’t take that for granted! Don’t keep it to yourself!

Today, God has entrusted you with 1,440 minutes to steward well. What will you do with them?

Whatever work you have to do today, whether in your home, at school, in the boardroom, or the garden, do your work in such a way that you make the invisible God visible by what you do and how you do it.

Reflection:

How have you seen God use your talents and skills to glorify him and edify (build up) others?

How can you worship God through your work this week?

About this Plan

Rooted in Worship

Many reduce worship to singing in church when, in fact, worship is so much more. The Bible makes it clear that worship is a lifestyle! As you become Rooted in Worship, you will see every moment, every relationship, and everything you have as an opportunity to express your love to the Lord in worship. This plan can be used along with the Rooted In Worship Small Group Video Series.
