Identity - Who Are You?

DAY 1 OF 6

Ask The Creator

As we look around the world, today people seem to search for the answer to whom they are and in the quest to understand their identity they go to the extreme to be different. Somehow being different becomes the priority. We identify with popularity, success, careers, relationships, education, position, status, geographical locations, economic backgrounds and the culture of the day just to list a few. Somehow we narrow down who we are by what we do or who we are associated with.

The definition of identity is, "Who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you. It also means the exact likeness in nature and qualities." I particularly like the last statement in the definition of identity because as a believer we do not find our identity in something, but instead, we find our identity in someone and His name is Jesus.

If we never realize that we are not what we do, we will forever chase every new fad and every new swing of the culture around us and that my friends will be a wilderness experience for the rest of our lives. We are so much more than the certificate we have hanging on our walls. We are so much more than the brand of clothes and shoes we wear, or the color of our skin, eyes or hair; yet the world seems to dictate to us who we should be by these very things.

For many years I struggled with my identity, born to an interracial couple, and then raised by a single parent, to living in an abusive home, to having no parents and having to become responsible for myself from a very young age. I struggled with my faith; wondering how a loving God could allow me to face all these different scenarios in one life. The struggle with my identity led me to make bad decisions because I was always looking to be made whole by things and people and I slipped further into the dictates and opinions of the world around me. But God had a plan all along, and I had to come to the end of my false sense of identity to face God like Moses did after he ran away from Egypt. In one day Moses went from being the prince of Egypt to a fugitive. Why? The answer is he was made for more but because he did not know who he was his actions defined him, until that day when he had the encounter with God in the burning bush. To understand who we are we must exhaust all our abilities, smarts, and self-sufficiency and face God to discover the truth about our identity.

You see only the manufacturer of a product can tell you conclusively about that product because they made it. So to discover who you are you must spend time with the One who made you. God knew you before you were formed in your mother's womb, He saw your whole life before you lived one day. So why not take a moment today to come to His feet, sit there a while and ask Him about you. I am sure your Heavenly Father would love to have that face to face with you.

About this Plan

Identity - Who Are You?

In the world, it’s easy for us to question our identities and who we are. We try to fit in and be like everyone else, but the truth is – We are not! Who you are is wrapped up in one Person only, and His name is Jesus. As you read through this plan, I pray that you would find your true self – the one that God created you to be.
