Called to Write

DAY 1 OF 3

Day 1: God loves words.

In the beginning, God spoke into darkness and created light. Heaven and earth obeyed his command, bursting into existence out of nothing. Remarkably, when God made humans in his image, he created them with the capacity to communicate一not only verbally一but in writing.

In Exodus 34:27, God told Moses to “write down these words” so that Israel would always remember his covenant with them. Similarly, he instructed the prophet Jeremiah to “write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.”

Think about this for a second. Even though God’s audible voice was powerful enough to shake the foundations of the earth, he still instructed his people to write things down. Why is that? It’s because there is an undeniable permanence and power to writing.

In his wisdom, God decided to reveal himself primarily through writing, which we now know as the Bible. Out of the numerous communication methods available to the Almighty, in his wisdom he chose a book to tell the world about himself.

What does this mean for your calling as a writer?

It means that every time you put your ideas onto the page, or sit down to type on a keyboard, you are engaged in a sacred act. While scripture is the ultimate revelation of God, nonetheless he’s called thousands of Christians to write through the centuries. As a writer, you join a long procession of authors who have glorified God through their craft.

If you write fiction, your imagination and creativity give readers a glimpse of God’s glory. For example, C.S. Lewis wrote his famous children’s series, The Chronicles of Narnia, which, although totally fictional, whispers of a God who defeats evil and sacrifices himself to save his people.

If you write nonfiction, you have an incredible opportunity to brush the dust from familiar topics, inviting readers to rediscover the wonder of God anew. You hold old truths up in a new light, helping people savor the majesty of God. You wipe the smudges off the lens of their hearts, so they can gaze once more at the wonder of Jesus.

If God has given you a love for writing, this is no accident. Like everything else he’s entrusted you with, including your possessions, gifts, and family, he’s inviting you to steward your written words.

Ask yourself: What is God leading me to write in this season?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for creating words to be powerful and permanent. You have worked powerfully through the written word, to tell others about your unending love. I desire to partner with you, by using my words for your glory. I commit to stewarding this gift一to become the best writer I can be, so that my words might bless others. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
