FINDING YOUR LIFE
Being a follower of Jesus can be hard—especially when you are in school. People make fun of you, they laugh behind your back, or you can’t attend events because you’re at church. Following Jesus can be unpleasant and at times even unpopular, and you’ve probably asked yourself the question: is it worth it?
This is the question that lies right at the heart of the prime life. This question more than any other question is one that’s at the epicenter of your chance to live life to the fullest. This question has the potential to change your life. And there was a time when Jesus spoke directly about this question.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." (Matthew 16:24)
Jesus decides to keep it real and says “listen, if you follow me, I mean all in follow me, it will absolutely cost you something.” He’s not sugar-coating it. His honesty makes you wonder if you should even bother following him fully—but Jesus speaks to this question too:
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. (Matthew 16:25)
What Jesus is saying here is that if you want to get the life he wants for you—the prime life— you’ll have to let go of the life you have. But if you do that, God promises that you will have the most amazing, significant, full, awesome, adventurous, crazy good life that you could ever live. And second, he promises that this life will be eternal. Jesus died and rose from the dead not just to give us life for a couple of decades but life that goes on forever. That’s the kind of life we’re talking about here.
That’s why it’s worth it to follow Jesus—or start following Jesus—even when you know sometimes it’s going to be unpleasant and unpopular. Because those who wish to save their lives will lose it. But those who lose their life, they are the ones who find it. And in light of that, it’s a no-brainer. But you have to decide.
Your best life is possible when you put it in the best hands. When you give it to him.
