DAY 2 OF 7

Justice and Mercy

In today's verses, we will look at the relationship between justice and mercy. We know a little bit about justice. We make laws to protect ourselves and courts to judge. God also revealed his laws to us and has set a day when he will judge. On the other hand, the Bible tells us that God is merciful. What would mercy be?

Jesus told us the following parable:

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When the settlement began, someone who owed him a huge amount of silver was brought before him. Since he was unable to pay, the Lord ordered him, his wife, his children, and everything he owned to be sold to pay the debt.” “The servant prostrated himself before him and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything.' The lord of that servant had compassion on him, canceled the debt, and let him go…”

The parable continues; however, this beginning shows us what mercy is. Justice ordered the servant and his family to be sold into slavery, but mercy canceled the debt and let him go. In a way, mercy is opposed to justice. Let us ask God for a direction on how we will live, with justice, or with mercy.
