PRINCE OF PEACE
The final name of Jesus revealed to us in Isaiah 9:6 is Prince of Peace. This name takes on a different grammatical form than the other names. Until this name, we’ve seen Jesus given a title with an adjective before that title to explain its significance. He is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father. With the last name given to the Messiah in this verse, His title comes first. If the writer were to follow the format of the previous names given, we would have Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and then Peaceful Prince. However, that’s not what the text says. He’s not our Peaceful Prince but the Prince of Peace. This distinction is significant because if He’s a peaceful Prince, that could mean he’s a tranquil or calm Prince, which is not a bad thing, but to be the Prince of Peace is far greater because it means that He controls peace not just for Himself, but rules peace and can give it to whoever He pleases. In John 16:33, Jesus says:
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
If our peace comes from Jesus, the world does not have the power to take it away. The word Prince in Isaiah 9:6 means chief, leader, official, captain, or ruler. As the Prince of Peace, Jesus has the authority to give us the eternal peace our souls were made to crave.
