The Lord's Prayer (The Model Prayer)

DAY 5 OF 9

Jesus teaches us to ask for “our daily bread.” Here, we ask God to meet our daily needs. We do not ask for any more or less than that. We simply seek for the Lord to meet our needs for one more day.

This always reminds me of the Israelites in the desert. In Exodus 16, the Israelites were complaining (again) about not having enough food to eat. God chose to provide for the Israelites in the desert with manna and quail. He sent quail in the evening and manna in the morning, and He told the Israelites to gather just as much as they needed for that day. No doubt some of the people would have tried to really stock up so they could feast for days to come. But verse 18 says, “When they measured it by quarts, the person who gathered a lot had no surplus, and the person who gathered a little had no shortage. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat.”

I think that God wanted the Israelites to have just what they needed for one day so that they would learn to continually trust in Him. Each day when they woke up, the Israelites had to trust that God would provide once again. Likewise, I believe the Lord’s Prayer teaches us to pray for God to meet our needs each day. And tomorrow, we’ll trust Him to do it all over again. Whatever needs we may have, whether physical, spiritual, or emotional, we should pray for God to meet those needs, and trust Him with it, knowing that He is able to provide for His children.
