Lessons From My Grandma's Garden

DAY 3 OF 3

Protect Yourself, Family and Friends

My grandma walked a few steps from her home to enter into her garden. She wore something that looked like an overcoat on her cloth while she was at work in her garden and was always very careful not to bring bugs into her home.

My grandma never brought her working overcoat into her home. She never allowed anything from her garden to enter her home, and if she did she made sure it was properly scrutinized to protect her health and that of her loved ones from risk.

As a young boy, one day I remember asking my grandma why she was scared of insects coming to her home, and she said that it was less expensive to prevent than to cure.  It is less work to build a hedge of protection around the things we love than trying to retrieve them after they have been taken away from us.

In other words, when we allow foreign organisms into our homes, we open doors for infections and other diseases that could have been prevented. This concept is the same like sin. When sin enters our soul, we lose grip of our authority and power. We become weak and sick in the spirit to the point that if we refuse to repent of the sin, we die in the spirit.

After my grandma was done working in her garden for the day, she hung her overcoat on a stick to serve as a scarecrow. She had a way of scaring away every bird with her unique scarecrow fashioned with her overcoat. Even though there was no power in the scarecrow, the birds thought my grandma was still standing in her garden.

The devil, just like the birds that flew over my grandma’s garden, came to steal and to destroy. But if you stand in the power of God's might and scare the devil off, you'll witness your hard labor producing some amazing fruits.

Like the scarecrow protecting all the different plants growing up in the garden, you have the authority to protect everything and anyone who comes under your roof.

The devil knows that no weapon formed against you would prosper, but he won’t stop attacking you. If he won’t stop, that means you don’t have a free period to take a nap in your walk with the Lord. But the good news is that you have overcome the devil with the word of your testimony and the blood of Jesus. Exercise your spiritual muscles and see the enemy come at you in one way but flee from you in seven ways. Amen.
