Knock Knock, Who's There?

DAY 2 OF 3

Life often places expectations on us from various avenues—family, friends, social media, and even ourselves. These expectations can significantly influence how we perceive ourselves and, consequently, our identity. We live day after day being told who we are supposed to be, and often these voices can have authority over our lives. While it's natural to desire approval and acceptance, it is important to assure that expectations will not distort our true identity, which will always be found in Christ!

In Ephesians 1:4-5, we are reminded of a profound truth: God chose us in Christ before the world was created. He predestined us for adoption as His children through Jesus Christ. This means that our core identity is not rooted in the expectations of others but instead in God's eternal love and purpose for us. Before anyone else had expectations of who we should be, God had already set His loving gaze upon us and called us His own.

However, the world often urges us to conform to its standards and expectations. This can easily lead us to question our true identity in Christ. We may feel pressured to pursue certain careers, callings, or even relationships simply because they align with what is “normal” of this age. These external expectations can twist our true sense of self, which ultimately causes us to prioritize the world's approval over God's. Scripture reminds us that to be lovers of this world will deeply distract us from our purpose and calling as believers!

James 4:4 is straight forward with this truth. “You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” Similarly, 1 John 2:15 reminds us that “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.” These scriptures may feel harsh, but they are crucial reminders to walk out our faith with assurance that this world ultimately is not our home and our identity cannot rest in the things found here.

To unveil our true identity in Christ amidst these worldly expectations, we must prioritize our relationship with Him above all else. Spending time in prayer, meditating on God's Word, and seeking His guidance are all the right places to start. Recognize that His expectations for us are rooted in His perfect love and wisdom! At times we may not fully understand His plan, but we can always trust that His plans for us are good. As we align our lives with His will, we discover a sense of newfound purpose and fulfillment that transcends every worldly standard.

External expectations indeed have a way of influencing our sense of self, but we have the power, through Christ and through the working of the Holy Spirit, to find our true identity. It's a continual journey of seeking God's approval above all else and embracing the purpose He has uniquely designed for us. Let go of the expectations that don't align with His will, and let your identity shine as a beloved child of God! We have been chosen and predestined to live a life of purpose and significance in Christ, and this outweighs every voice the world speaks.

About this Plan

Knock Knock, Who's There?

Knowing who you are can be difficult in a world that constantly tries to tell you who you are. Sometimes comparison, different expectations, and life’s experiences can influence where we put our identity. Rooting your identity in scripture is the most important defense.
