12 Rules for Life (Days 1-4)

DAY 3 OF 4

Day 3: Stick with People Who Want the Best for You

Scripture: Proverbs 13:20

"He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm."

Quote from Jordan Peterson: "Make friends with people who want the best for you."

I love how the Word of God is filled with practical wisdom for life. When it comes to friendships, Proverbs 13:20 couldn't be more spot-on. It goes hand in hand with what Jordan Peterson said about surrounding yourself with people who genuinely want the best for you.

Consider the story of David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 18.

They had a friendship that was solid, sincere, and centered on the best for each other. Jonathan, the son of King Saul, recognized the anointing on David's life and supported him, even when it meant standing against his own father. Now, that's the kind of friend you want in your corner!

But let's face it: We’ve all had friendships that were more draining than uplifting. Some people, intentionally or unintentionally, pull us down rather than lift us up. They don't want the best for us; they want what's best for them. That's where discernment comes in. Friendships should be like a two-way street, both giving and receiving, encouraging and being encouraged.

The relationships we choose to invest in will shape our lives in profound ways. The right friendship WILL propel you forward, while the wrong ones WILL hold you back. This really hits home and reminds me of something my dad would say and preach about often. He would say, “Friends are like buttons on an elevator. They will either take you up or take you down.”

Before you dive into your day, take some time to reflect on these questions:

  • How are your current friendships affecting your life? Are they pushing you toward your God-given purpose or pulling you away?
  • What qualities do you value in a friend, and how can you foster those qualities in your existing relationships?
  • Are there relationships you need to evaluate or possibly step away from? How can you approach this with wisdom and grace?

Friendships aren't just about having a good time together; they're about growing together. They're about building each other up, challenging each other, and walking together through the highs and the lows.

Affirmation: "Today, I choose to surround myself with people who genuinely want the best for me. I seek wisdom in my friendships and strive to be a friend who encourages and uplifts others."

Remember David and Jonathan. Seek those friendships that are sincere and genuine. Stick with people who are happy for your success and willing to support you in your struggles. God has placed people in your life who will encourage, challenge, and help you grow in your faith. I believe, RIGHT NOW, that the Holy Spirit is reminding you of who needs to be in your life and who does not.

Embrace those relationships. Nurture them. Be that friend to others as well. And always keep God at the center. He's the best friend you'll ever have.

I’m rooting for you. I’m praying with you.
