God's Redemption Story (Genesis)

DAY 19 OF 25

Genesis 25–31 tells the story of a man who deceived his dying father, stole his brother’s birthright, and cheated his father-in-law. The name Jacob, which means “usurper,” was a perfect fit for this guy. But chapter 32 shows a humbled man on the run with two wives, two mistresses, a dozen kids, and an enormous collection of livestock. Jacob sent gifts of animals and servants to meet Esau to butter up his brother. Overcome by fear, Jacob even sent his wives and children ahead of him and spent one more night alone in the wilderness.

That night, God wrestled with Jacob—the wrestling match of a lifetime. Jacob took the opportunity to remind God that he had promised to prosper Jacob. They tumbled and gripped and rolled all night, but Jacob wouldn’t let go. He knew God had a blessing for him, and he refused to give up on it. Though the fight was hard, God dislocated his hip, and Esau was coming closer by the minute, Jacob held on to the belief that God had something good for him.

If you’re waiting for God’s blessing, hold on tight. He won’t let you down.
