7 Lies Threatening Your Servant Leadership

DAY 2 OF 7

The Lie of Perception

The lie of perception can creep in slowly. Jesus warned us of false prophets who seem like sheep but are really wolves. This leader is one who often manipulates or will squeeze everything he can out of his followers to reach his goals. It’s often difficult to know the real motives of this leader. But time has a way of showing us the real motives.

We are told in these verses to be on guard, expecting false prophets who come to manipulate. How will you know a wolf from a sheep? Jesus explained this to us by using the illustration of a good or bad tree. You can tell a tree from its fruit.

This leader may start out deceiving his followers with seemingly low-level leadership ideologies like hiding weaknesses. Maybe you never mention any weakness. “The best leaders never complain…” he says. Which sounds great, right? Who needs a leader who complains? But there’s a big difference between carrying a positive attitude during a struggling time—and—hiding weaknesses from your team.

Seeking to appear stronger or more perfect than you are, you hide your weaknesses rather than owning them. You must lead in the open, speaking courageously about where you have fallen. Ask God to help you be genuine in your relationships, be intentional with how you tell stories, and speak about yourself. Share your feelings rather than holding them too tightly for fear of being judged or pretending to be without struggles.

On the other side of this lie is understanding and respect from those you serve. When your confidence comes from God rather than from your own work or false projection to others, you’re creating an atmosphere where those you serve will value vulnerability and transparency.

God, would You guide me with wisdom from You to notice this lie in myself and stop it before it eats my leadership alive?
