Shadow-Breakers: A 10-Day Devotional for Christian Divorcees

DAY 2 OF 10

God Knows

It happened. The conversations were had. The decision was made. The process began. Papers were signed. The gavel came down, and life as you knew it was no more. Now here you are, trying to make sense of the world. Of your life. Of your future.

Being a newly divorced person is an entirely disorienting and often lonely place to be. And it seems that no matter how or how much you try to explain what you’re experiencing to others, it never quite seems sufficient. For all the empathizing your loved ones can do, they can’t ever fully grasp the depth of what you’re feeling, and the isolation is near paralyzing.

But take heart, dear one; you are not alone. The One who knows your heart, who knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb, understands. Jeremiah 3:8 tells us that God knows what it’s like to be divorced. There, God says—I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. And while the Old Testament frequently uses the metaphor of “marriage” between God and biblical Israel, the relationship between the two was no metaphor. It was a real, covenanted relationship. God’s commitment to love the Israelites and His desire for them to faithfully reciprocate that love was very real. When they broke the covenant, it broke God’s heart.

God, the One closest to you, knows the pain of betrayal, broken vows, separation, and divorce. God understands and promises to be with you through it all (Isaiah 43:1-2). Don’t go through this recovery as though you’re alone. You’re not. God is with you. Invite God into this process. Bare your soul to God, vent, cry, and process. For every emotion you’re experiencing, God can identify, and God can heal.

Today’s Promise: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)

About this Plan

Shadow-Breakers: A 10-Day Devotional for Christian Divorcees

Shadows are quite intriguing when you’re a kid playing in the sun. But when those shadows are cast by divorce, they’re not so fun anymore. Divorce has a way of blocking the light of God’s love, causing us to live in shadows of disillusionment, insecurity, and fear. This 10-day devotional will help you cast off those shadows to begin living fully in the light of God’s love once again!
