Titus, Part One

DAY 4 OF 14

The hope of eternal life

“… in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began” (Titus 1:2).

Paul explains why he is so concerned about people’s faith and knowledge of God. It is all about “eternal life.” This life has been promised by God long ago, even before the beginning of time. It has not yet come in its fullness, but we can nevertheless be sure that God will fulfill His promises since He never lies.

Hope is about the future, and therefore it is, by definition, about things we can’t see yet. But in this case, our hope is not uncertain because we know the One who made the promise, and He always keeps His word.

“God is not man, that He should lie,
or a son of man, that He should change his mind.
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19).

This hope of eternal life makes all the difference, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15. If there was no life after death, if Jesus had not conquered death by becoming alive again, our faith would be futile. But now, since Jesus did break the power of death, Paul can’t stop sharing this good news and inviting people to surrender to Jesus to receive eternal life in His presence.

What do you believe about life after death?
