Discovering Your Identity in Christ

DAY 1 OF 4

Knowing God

We all have the desire to have a sense of identity and belonging. We want to know that in the grand scheme of things, our lives matter. We often spend our lives seeking to make meaning for ourselves through work, relationships, or possessions, but the truth is our identity comes from the Lord himself.

To have a solid understanding of who we are – we first have to know WHOSE we are. One of the challenges we face in knowing whose we are, is knowing that HE is good. Circumstances and situations can rob us of having a good understanding of who God is.

Let’s read Psalm 145:8-9 (NLT):

“The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry, and filled with unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all His creation.”

The Psalmists would often remind themselves of who God is – His character and His ways. Isn't it better for us to get our truth from the unchanging one than anything else from this world?

Let’s Reflect

1. Think about how you would describe yourself to someone who didn’t know you. Write down a few thoughts.

2. Look at your list and consider the types of things you are using to describe yourself - personality, looks, comparison, job, school, etc. Categorize each of them.

3. Read through Psalm 145 in its entirety and write down all the adjectives (descriptive words) that talk about who God is.

4. Take your first list you wrote about yourself, now look at the list through the lens of the description of God's character and take some time to ask the Lord to show you what He sees when He looks at you through his eyes.
