Infinitum Advent Make Room, Week 3

DAY 2 OF 5

This Christmas, making room for Jesus in our lives means making room for others. Jesus tells His followers that whatever is done to even the least of all people, it’s as if it’s been done to Him.

Wouldn’t it be so beautiful to look back on this Christmas knowing that the Light of the World came and we did not close our doors to Him? Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children of mine welcomes Me.”

“Welcome” has two states of being: a physical welcome is the act of opening spaces and doors. Making physical access available to others. Welcome also has a non-physical state of being: the opening of our hearts. This Christmas, what do you sense is the state of welcome you’re being invited to make room for? Is it physical? Non-physical? Both?

As followers of Jesus, we are keenly aware of how Jesus’ life and love have blessed us, and we often assume that our high spiritual performance is what blesses Him. When Jesus tells the story of the sheep and the goats, where the 'sheep' bless His heart with their actions, the ‘high spiritual performance’ examples He gives are things like offering a cup of water or sharing your coat with someone cold or visiting someone in a difficult spot. Simple acts, no grand gestures in the list He gives. The kind of ‘welcome’ or ‘making room’ that starts as a heart posture and bubbles up in simple, intimate ways.

Making room in our hearts for Jesus might look like sharing your Christmas morning with a refugee family, but it also might look like writing a postcard of encouragement to a senior citizen. Both physical acts of welcome make room in this world for belonging and care of Jesus’ children; both begin with making room in our hearts for Jesus.

How would you like to make room for Jesus this Christmas?

Who do you think Jesus has in mind to cozy up into that new-found room in your heart?
