DAY 48 OF 365

LEADERS IN MISSION

God was faithful to his promise to give the descendants of Abraham a land overflowing with his blessing and provision. Since the time when Adam lived in the garden, God gave his image-bearers a significant role in leading his people. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Joshua are examples of individuals God used. These leaders, though fallen and marred by the consequences of sin, were instrumental in stewarding God’s work in the world. Yet as children of the curse, these leaders all died.

The book of Judges opens with the death of a great leader of Israel. Joshua mobilized the people of God to conquer the land of Canaan following Moses’ death. He exhorted the people to be obedient, emboldened them with confidence and led them to take the land God had provided. This land, however, was still littered with God’s enemies. God commanded his people to rid the land of any nation who stood opposed to the one true God and his people. At the time of Joshua’s death, much work remained undone and the mission needed to be completed.

Now the God-ordained leaders — the tribe of Judah — needed to take up the mantle of leadership. Empowered by God’s Spirit, they led God’s people to face their bitter opponents. God’s promise was clear — he would go before them and remain with them so they had nothing to fear. It was God, and God alone, who would win the victory and give the opponents over to destruction. All the nation of Israel needed to do was trust and obey.

God’s faithfulness to his mission continues today. Leaders come and go, but God remains sovereign to work according to his good purposes. This work will continue based on the power and presence of God — not the ingenuity or strength of human leaders.

Jesus demonstrated this reality following his resurrection. He told his followers to wait on the power of the Holy Spirit before they moved out in mission with him (Ac 1:4). For them, the task would not be occupying a territory by military might but filling the entire earth with the knowledge and glory of God. This mission is one that will happen “ ‘not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Zec 4:6).

Jesus, I pray for those you have put in leadership positions. Please give them courage, strength and wisdom to make decisions that will bring you glory. Amen.
