Chris Tomlin - Never Lose Sight Devotional

DAY 10 OF 11

"All Yours" Devotional
Chris Tomlin

Children learn the word “mine” early on in life, and it quickly becomes a favorite. “That toy is mine…That cookie is mine…That puppy is mine.” We come into this world declaring certain things are ours, believing we have ownership of them and control over them.

Even though we grow out of verbally demanding “mine!”, we don’t grow out of feeling like we really do own everything, and deservedly so. We daily try to stake claim to our lives and everything in them by clinging to relationships, comfort, our jobs, and our homes. We cling to our plans and whatever gives us a sense of certainty.

But is anything really ours?

Psalm 24 says, “The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” (Psalm 24:1-2)

You set the boundaries for the oceans
You command the wind and waves
Standing over every season, God you reign, you reign

As the creator, God is the only one who can lay claim to the world and everything in it, including us. For, as David says in Psalm 139, “Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” (Psalm 139:16)

God has authored our days. He knows how many of them we will have. He knows what’s in store. When we believe in this, we can loosen our grip on our lives and on our things. It’s not easy to do this—what we have brings us so much comfort—but when we do, we experience true freedom, a real rest that is only found in the assurance of God’s control above our own.

What can you loosen your grip on today that you’ve been holding onto? Can you entrust it to the God who made you and has authored your days? Surrender to him what is already his.

God, it’s all yours
