The Way of Kingsનમૂનો
Rest
Jesus knew the value of rest. Over and over again, Jesus would finish his work healing the sick, speaking to thousands, or doing miracles, only to disappear to a quiet place of rest. Even back in the Genesis account of the creation, for six days God acted with passion as He created the entire universe, but then God himself carved out a day to rest.
Regardless of our power, influence, might, or ability, each of us is a human who is limited. So often the world around us, with all its problems to solve, battles to fight, and competitions to win, can make us think we will fall behind, fail, or miss out if we stop to rest.
The reality is that as humans we were created to do amazing things in the world. We were made to work hard and to do so much that we get tired. And being tired is a blessing from God. It is a physical, mental, and emotional reminder that we need to recharge. It forces us to stop to breathe and take in the beauty of the world we are trying to change.
We don’t just climb the mountains to win the peak; we also do it for the view. And to take in the view on the way up, we must sometimes stop along the way and look out over the beauty where we are.
Rest is a vital aspect of ruling well the things God has given us. It will look different for all of us, and it is not passive. Rest is taking the time to eat a good meal, talk with someone who encourages us, read a book that inspires new ideas or connect with the One who made us and can renew our strength.
Tired, angry, frustrated, and drained people cannot rule their kingdoms well. But kings who have learned the value of balance will affect their domains with the most positive power. For it’s in rest and silence away from the noise and in the presence of God that we rediscover the strength, inspiration, and passion for living out our story. It’s in rest that we can again connect with our Creator and be reminded of who we are and what we were created for.
Think of the last time you were emotionally and physically spent. What role did rest hold in helping and healing you? What makes it hard for you to welcome rest into your life?
