Spiritual Gifts

DAY 1 OF 5

Gifts That Glorify

When talking about ‘spiritual gifts,’ people tend to lump together personal talents and abilities with the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but these are three different aspects of ministry.

The fruit of the Spirit is shown in Galatians 5:22–23. This is the character of Christ, grown over time, that allows others to see how good the Lord is.

In Romans 12:3–8, Paul talks about gifts given through God’s grace to help others, and he warns us not to be arrogant with these. Paul mentions prophecy, serving, encouraging, giving, teaching, and leading.

1 Corinthians 12:1–11 shows the Holy Spirit operating powerful gifts through us. God owns these gifts, and He uses us to deliver His power to people from the Holy Spirit. Because He lives in us, we have those gifts ‘stored’ within us, ready to be delivered at His prompting.

Years ago, I was preaching in a rural church when people asked for prayer at the close of each service. Many healings began to occur, and more unchurched people came to hear the Gospel, just as in Jesus’ day. As I was driving home afterward, I remember saying, ‘Dear God, that was so wonderful, but you could have done all that Yourself. You really didn’t need me there.’ I felt His reply in my thoughts, ‘Yes, but I needed you there as a witness – to tell the stories in years to come.’ I realized I’m just a first-hand storyteller – Jesus is the miracle worker, and the Holy Spirit operates those gifts to glorify Him.

About this Plan

Spiritual Gifts

‘Spiritual gifts’ is a term we can get really hung up on. In this plan, we’ll look at all the spiritual gifts God gives us. Gifts to serve, gifts to love others, gifts to challenge one another, and gifts that leave a legacy. Gifts God has given us can change the circumstances around us because these gifts were given to shine His light, not our own.
